Over a decade ago, I started noticing that hawks were consciously interacting with me.
I was confused.
Why was this happening?
What were they trying to tell me?
Was this a spirit of someone who had passed away who was trying to send me a message?
I truly had no idea.
And I had no way to figure it out.
My spiritual path was like this for a long time. “Unusual” things were happening in my environment but rarely did I receive clear messages or guidance to go along with it.
Learning how to consciously communicate with the spirits of nature totally opened a whole new world to me.
Once I understood it and practiced it, I began to receive more complete information.
And the better I got at communicating, the more “colorful” the spirit world became to me. It wasn’t just sensing a spirit or hearing a message, but I started being able to see things in my mind’s eye that I hadn’t been able to see before.
Now, I can understand if the spirits need my assistance and how they’d like me to help.
In the beginning, they often asked me to pick up trash while I was out walking.
Or cut a dead limb from a tree.
Or move a plant to a spot it might be happier.
But as the spirits have grown to trust me (and me them), our relationship has deepened and our work together becomes more complex.
They’ve shown me how to open and tend portals.
Shift and balance energy within the earth’s grids.
And asked me to join them in beautiful ceremonies.
Working together, we are able to release trauma and pain embedded in the earth and create vibrant and healthy places for all those inhabiting a particular area.
But there are four mistakes people tend to make when starting to do this work (me included).
1. Waiting Around to Receive Information
Communicating with spirit is an active activity.
No amount of laying on a yoga mat and willing your mind to be emptied will ever help you meet your guides or any other spirit.
It might create some occasional spontaneous spiritual experiences, but as soon as your mind realizes that’s happening and gets all excited or just tries to remember what’s happening, POOF, it’s all over.
And you have no idea how to recreate that experience.
But once you get the hang of it, channeling with spirit can be a part of your day to day life.
“Oh, hey there tree friend, how are you doing in this heat we’ve been having?”
“What’s that? You’re a little thirsty and could use some extra water? Okay, I’ll turn the sprinkler on for you. Cool? Cool.”
Yep, it’s as easy as that.
The more you do it, the more complex the information will be, but to begin with, it’s good to just start talking with (and listening to) all of the other beings in your environment.
Spirits who communicate with us want their information to be heard. They’re not (usually) just going to shout into the wind and hope you hear them.
2. Not trusting the information you receive
Look, sometimes messages from spirit are weird. One time I was channeling and kept hearing:
“Umm, what was that? I don’t think I heard that correctly”.
Alrighty then, I wrote it down. Scrambled eggs.
As far as I know, it had nothing to do with anything. Sometimes I think my guides think it’s funny to see if they can get me to write something down.
Or maybe it’s just a test to make sure I’m really paying attention before an important message comes through.
Whatever it is that comes through, you don’t need to understand it at the time. Just write or speak it all as you receive it.
We tend to spend a lot of time worrying about whether we’re making it all up or whether its happening at all, especially because receiving messages often sounds exactly the same as talking to yourself in your head.
The sooner you can just decide to trust the information you’re receiving, the faster you’ll begin receiving messages.
Spirits don’t tend to keep talking to someone who isn’t listening or doesn’t believe them.
3. Not using your discernment
Yep...like it or not, there are plenty of spirits out there who aren’t connected to source energy that will happily take advantage of your interest in communicating with the unseen world to send messages that are not in your best interest.
After receiving information, be sure to check in with how you feel about it.
Does this seem like information that would come from a spirit connected with source energy?
Is it asking you to do something you don’t feel good about?
And always be wary of spirits who tell you either that you have to go through them to get some kind of information or who are telling you things that feel like they’re stroking your ego.
I don’t want this to scare you away from learning to communicate with spirit.
99.9% of my interactions with spirit have been positive, but it would be irresponsible of me not to let you know this is a possibility.
Do not throw your good judgement out the window just because the information came from spirit.
You can always say no to any requests, even from a benevolent spirit.
4. Going it alone
This is a lesson that’s taken me years to learn.
Because it can feel scary to put yourself out there.
To share the information you’re receiving and the experiences you’re having.
But it’s the fastest way to validate that it’s all really happening and that you’re getting the information correctly.
And because everyone’s skills and talents are different, when you work together in a group, your energy is amplified and so much more can be accomplished.
I truly believe that working not just with a mentor, but with an entire community of people on a similar path will help bring your own gifts to the surface to be shared much more quickly than going it on your own.
